Visitors to Ijen Crater are now required to prepare additional requirements before starting their hike. A new regulation states that all tourists must provide a medical certificate confirming they are in good health.
This requirement has been officially implemented by BBKSDA to improve safety standards for visitors exploring the challenging terrain of the Ijen area. Previously, tourists arranged their own health certificates, either from nearby clinics or from their hometowns.
In addition to the medical certificate, visitors must also bring personal health and safety equipment. These include proper footwear, warm jackets due to cold mountain temperatures, masks to protect against sulfur exposure, and other essential items to ensure a safe hiking experience.
The required health check for Ijen hikers is considered basic. It includes examination of pulse rate, blood pressure, body weight, and height. For individuals of productive age, the process is similar to standard health checks commonly required for job applications.
For elderly visitors, the health examination is more detailed. In addition to pulse and blood pressure checks, they are also required to undergo blood sugar and cholesterol testing. This is intended to reduce the risk of health issues during the hike.
To support this policy, a health post is now available at Paltuding Post, the main entry point to the hiking trail. This facility allows visitors to obtain the required health certificate directly on site.
The health certificate, known locally as “suket sehat,” is mandatory for all hikers. It helps authorities assess each visitor’s physical condition before allowing them to continue their journey within the Ijen Geopark.
Visitors are charged a fee of Rp 20,000 per person for the service. The health post operates 24 hours a day with medical staff always on standby. It serves not only hikers but also anyone who needs medical assistance in the area.
The inauguration of the Ijen Geopark Tourism Health Post reflects the local government’s commitment to supporting the tourism sector. With proper healthcare facilities in place, it is expected that visitor confidence will increase, leading to higher tourist arrivals.
In addition, the health post is expected to serve as a center for public health information for nearby communities. This initiative also aims to improve overall health standards in the Ijen area while ensuring that tourism activities remain safe and well managed.
